Top 10 Movies & TV Shows That Make Math Look Cool

Top 10 Movies & TV Shows That Make Math Look Cool

Math and movies might seem like an odd pair to most, but some of the best films and TV shows have used mathematics to tell powerful, inspiring stories. Especially if you're into biography genre there are lots of hidden gems in math movies or TV series. I personally enjoy seeing them solving complex equations, cracking unbreakable codes, or using math to defy the odds. There are hundreds of movies out there about math or mathematicians, and I've seen a fair share of them. I put together this top ten list of math movies, and it wasn't easy to choose, let me tell you! I didn't just go with what I like; I looked at critic reviews, IMDb scores, and how popular they are too. So, if you're a math enthusiast, or just someone who loves a great story, here are ten movies and shows that make mathematics look downright cinematic. Here's hoping this list saves you some time and leads you to some awesome math-themed watches. Grab your popcorns, we're beginning:

1. A Beautiful Mind (2001)

🎭 Starring: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris

🎬 Director: Ron Howard

🍿Where to Watch: Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Google Play.

Let's start with a classic. A Beautiful Mind is a gripping biopic about John Nash. He is a brilliant but troubled mathematician who made groundbreaking contributions to game theory. (Game Theory was seriously one of those courses that had me sweating in college🫠) I think, Russell Crowe delivers an great performance, portraying Nash's rise in academia, especially his struggles with schizophrenia, and his eventual triumph, culminating in a Nobel Prize.

One of the most exciting aspects of this film is how it visualizes Nash's mathematical genius, numbers seem to glow and rearrange themselves before his eyes. Yes, now you know which movie that famous meme comes from. 😁 Anyway, I would define this movie as an emotional rollercoaster that reminds us that even the brightest minds face challenges.

2. Interstellar (2014)

🎭 Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain

🎬 Director: Christopher Nolan

🍿Platform: Netflix, Amazon Prime and Google Play

Okay, this one is more about physics than pure math, but let's be real. Math is the backbone of everything in this film. Interstellar follows a group of astronauts who use complex equations and astrophysics to travel through a wormhole in search of a new livable planet.

The movie's big mathematical moment? The mindbending use of time dilation. Due to the effects of gravity near a black hole, time passes much faster for some characters than others, leading to heartbreaking consequences. Oh, and real-life physicist Kip Thorne helped ensure that the film's science was as accurate as possible. Talk about math meeting Hollywood! To sum up, one watch of Interstellar just won't cut it. It's the kind of movie you keep coming back to until you finally get what's going on. (guilty here 🫢)

3. Genius (2017- )

🎭 Starring: Geoffrey Rush, Johnny Flynn, Samantha Colley (Season 1)

🎬 Network: National Geographic

🍿Platform: Apple TV and Amazon Prime

Genius is a TV series that dives deep into the lives of history's greatest minds. Season 1 , which is also my favorite season, focuses on Albert Einstein, showing how his thinking led to discoveries in physics and mathematics. Geoffrey Rush plays the older Einstein, while Johnny Flynn acts him as a young man trying to survive in academia, love, and ahh.. the challenges of war. Later seasons shift focus to other geniuses with different kinds of intelligence like Pablo Picasso (who I hate and love at the same time while watching the episodes) and Aretha Franklin. But Season 1 is a must watch for anyone fascinated by how mathematical brilliance shaped the modern world.

4. Good Will Hunting (1997)

🎭 Starring: Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck

🎬 Director: Gus Van Sant

🍿Platform: Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Google Play

This isn't just a movie about math. it's a movie about talent, mentorship, and finding one's path in life. Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT who secretly has an extraordinary gift for math. When he anonymously solves an impossible problem left on a chalkboard, a professor (Stellan Skarsgård) sets out to uncover the mind behind the solution. But Will is haunted by his past, and it takes the guidance of a therapist, played by Robin Williams (he is the actor of these kinds of characters, isn't he?) in one of his most heartfelt roles. The therapist helps him realize his potential and so forth. I admit that this film is more about human connection and math is only a central to the plot but this list would be incomplete without Good Will Hunting.

5. The Imitation Game (2014)

🎭 Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode

🎬 Director: Morten Tyldum

🍿Platform: Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

How using math to win a war sounds to you? The Imitation Game tells the true story of Alan Turing. He is a brilliant mathematician and logician who cracked the Nazi Enigma code during World War II.

Benedict Cumberbatch gives a outstanding performance as Turing, whose work in cryptography laid the foundation for modern computers. But beyond the math, the film also explores Turing's personal struggles and the injustice he faced due to his sexuality. It's a fascinating and moving tribute to one of history's unsung heroes.

6. Moneyball (2011)

🎭 Starring: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman

🎬 Director: Bennett Miller

🍿Platform: Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Google Play

Okay, baseball and math might not seem like a natural pair, but Moneyball makes a case for how statistics can revolutionize a game. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane (the real-life general manager of the Oakland A's) who uses advanced analytics (rather than traditional scouting) to build a baseball team on a budget.

Jonah Hill plays Peter Brand, a young economist (loosely based on real-life statistician Paul DePodesta) who helps Beane challenge the status quo using data-driven insights. It's a sports movie, yes, but it's really about thinking differently and using numbers to outsmart the system. If someone can use math to win a baseball game, there's no need to question everyday use of math anymore. Am I right?

7. Hidden Figures (2016)

🎭 Starring: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe

🎬 Director: Theodore Melfi

🍿Platform: Amazon Prime and Google Play

This inspiring film tells the true story of three African American women Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson who were instrumental in NASA's early space missions. Before computers, human "computers" (as they were called) did complex calculations by hand, and these women's mathematical skills helped put astronauts into orbit.

Taraji P. Henson (Katherine Johnson in the movie), whose precise calculations made John Glenn's historic spaceflight possible. Hidden Figures is as much about perseverance and breaking barriers as it is about math, and it's a must-watch for anyone who loves a good underdog story.

8. The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)

🎭 Starring: Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons, Toby Jones

🎬 Director: Matt Brown

🍿Platform: Available in most platforms including Amazon Prime, Hulu, Google Play, Apple TV and Youtube TV

This lesser-known gem tells the story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self-taught Indian mathematician who, despite little formal education, made contributions to number theory.

Dev Patel plays Ramanujan, who travels to England to work with the esteemed mathematician G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons). The film beautifully captures the clash of cultures, the struggles of an outsider, and the sheer brilliance of Ramanujan's mathematical insights.

9. Numb3rs (2005-2010)

🎭 Starring: Rob Morrow, David Krumholtz, Judd Hirsch

🎬 Network: CBS

🍿Platform: Amazon Prime and Apple TV

A math genius helping the FBI solve crimes? Sounds far-fetched, but Numb3rs makes it work. In this procedural drama, Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz) is a mathematics professor who uses advanced equations to help his FBI-agent brother (Rob Morrow) crack cases.

The show mixes real mathematical concepts with a good storytelling, proving that math isn't just for classrooms and it can be used to predict criminal behavior, analyze data, and solve mysteries. In the grand scheme of things, the main idea is similar to Moneyball we mentioned earlier.

10. Pi (1998)

🎭 Starring: Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis

🎬 Director: Darren Aronofsky

🍿Platform: Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV and Fandango

For those who like their movies a little weird, Pi is a psychological thriller that explores the obsession with finding hidden mathematical patterns in the universe. Sean Gullette plays Max, a reclusive mathematician convinced that there is a mathematical code underlying everything.

As Max's paranoia spirals out of control, the film delves into themes of madness, genius, and the dangers of obsession. It's intense, (and sometimes unsettling), and perfect for those who like their math with a side of existential crisis, haha.

So, Math might not always get the Hollywood spotlight, but these movies and shows prove it can be as exciting as any blockbuster. Please tell me if there's a movie or TV series you think it should be on this list. And which one is your favorite? Reach out and let me know!
